The easiest time to clean your mattress is on laundry day. Once the sheets are off, take a look at the seams, the sides, and the spot where you usually sleep. Fit your vacuum with a clean upholstery attachment and work across the top in overlapping passes. Run the attachment along the stitched edges, around the tufts, and down the sides. On a quilted mattress, follow the grooves where crumbs and dust tend to settle.

Leave the bed uncovered and let air circulate. A fan directed across the surface can help. Before you remake the bed, press a dry towel firmly against the cleaned area. If it picks up moisture, give the mattress more time. If a spill soaked deep into the filling or a musty smell keeps returning, contact the manufacturer for guidance.
For easier upkeep, use a washable protector and check it whenever you change the sheets. The next time a cup of tea tips over, you may only need to do a load of laundry.
